First Sino-German “Megawater-Program” conference in Shanghai

In the context of the new Chinese Five-Year-Plan and in order to foster the Sino-German dialogue on “Megawater cooperation” the first Sino-German “Megawater-Program” conference was held in Shanghai on 9th December 2016.

The event was inaugurated by high-ranked representatives of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), the Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP), the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MoHURD), and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Among the invited participants were German and Chinese project partners, local decision makers and experts from the main areas of the “Megawater-Program”. The conference’s contents were derived from the three major joint projects that were initiated in spring 2015. Furthermore, findings, challenges, and recommendations for future research topics and activities were discussed. The central item of the agenda was the work towards shared funding guidelines for both countries. Additionally, MoST, MEP, MoHURD, and BMBF agreed on the establishment of a coordinating committee. In annual meetings this committee will decide on the means of cooperation in funding programs.

With the prospect of initiating a number of joint projects in 2017 within the Sino-German “Research and Innovation Program Clean Water” as part of CLIENT II – international partnerships for sustainable innovations, the further expansion of the Sino-German cooperation in the water sector is planned.
