M2 – Support in introducing an IWRM

The development and improvement of monitoring systems and protection schemes require sound knowledge regarding the current state of ecosystems. Also, a distinctive set of criteria as well as models to work with have to be found. Hence, the initial project stage included a data review of water bodies, catchment areas and present as well as naturally expected biocenoses (reference biocenoses) and reviewed the existing evaluation system.

Existing data from earlier monitoring campaigns conducted by the Chinese Ministry of the Environment (MEP) and Chinese research institutes (CRAES, LAES) were the basis for the selection of suitable model sites. Evaluating existing data helps to both select suitable parameters and to identify shortfalls in the data base. The evaluation is also important for sub-project M1, “Good Water Governance.” Although it requires a multivariate analysis, the consideration of current research findings is essential for the adequate assessment of habitat conditions and the evaluation of the impact of various measures. As biotic and abiotic criteria are evaluated separately, biotic changes as a result of abiotic variation can be tested.
